Now don't be confused there is big difference between E-commerce, MarketPlace and Social MarketPlace websites
For example: Amazon and eBay are the most known MarketPlace in the world. Although, in most cases they don't offer delivery to Nigeria.
One of the most famous Social MarketPlace in the world is Facebook
No doubt, Facebook started as social media and has since incorporated marketplace which is available in some developed countries and some 3rd world countries depending on risk factors
In Nigeria, there are many e-commerce websites and few MarketPlace websites but there is only one Social MarketPlace so far known which is www.martfame.ng
Looking at the image below, you can see the Facebook MarketPlace menu icon which users use to navigate to sell, buy and advertise product and services.
E-commerce is a website that offers products and services for sale online for a single company where buyers can purchase products from a single company or an individual who is the sole owner of the website
MarketPlace website is an online platform that allows different vendors and individual sellers to promote and sell their products online. The owner of the website will allow the vendors to register their PayPal account, bank account, flutterwave or paystack account on the MarketPlace website so that when any buyer purchased the product on the marketplace platform, the marketplace automatically deduct his percentage, the payment gateway i.e paypal, flutterwave or bank assisting to facilitate the online transaction will also deduct their own percentage -- please always check the marketplace terms of service and applicable fees.

Jumia is one of the most popular e-commerce - they have their own brand, the company imports products from abroad to sell in Nigeria. In this case, only Jumia can sell on Jumia website which makes it an e-commerce website
Jiji.ng is a classified ads like Gumtree in the UK, this type of website doesn't facilitate online payments. It only allows vendors or sellers to showcase their products and services and also share contact details with potential buyers. Once both a seller and potential buyer reaches agreement on price, they both fix appointment on their preferred location to exchange cash and product.
MartFame.NG has been in operations in UK and Malaysia until recently relocating to Nigeria. MartFame.NG offers social-media & MarketPlace functions.
Whether you wish to open a B2B (Business-to-Business) or B2C (Business-to-Customers) or M2B (Manufacturer-to-Business) or M2C (Manufacturer-to-Customer) Marketplace connecting the suppliers and business and make transactions online or either your own online store, where you can let other sellers sell your products along with you, MartFame.NG offers the best tool-set and support system that will make your business triumph online.
MartFame also allows you to connect and socialize with everyone across all works-of-life while doing business.
You don't need to invest heavily in building and managing your own website. Building, designing, managing and hosting website are not cheap or easy no matter how anyone describe it to you.
Why did I say this?
Firstly, and not to scare you, if you are small-scale business owner, yes you can have a small scale ecommerce website where you can display your products and services. All it will cost you are domain name - in this case, if your domain name is going to be .com, .com.ng? it will cost less than ₦6700 but if you want your domain name to end at .ng? this will cost over ₦10000
Hosting your website as a small scale business will also cost you depending what you want; shared hosting or dedicated hosting? how much disk space you want? how much bandwidth you want? do you want static IP and SSL secure socket layer these two functions will require each other before it can be applied. The SSL will show a Lock on the browser next to your domain name to show users that transactions or any sort communication are protected against hackers on your website more so that you want your website to process money.
Some hosting companies can provide shared SSL which can bring down the cost for small scale eCommerce website.
The cost becomes cheaper if you are able to design the web-page by yourself using one of the CMS content management system such as Joomla or Wordpress. This means that you don't have to pay for developer. All you may need to pay for are shared components, modules and plug-ins for your e-commerce (you will need to read each components descriptions or deploy the trial apps to confirm if the specification meet your needs. If it is close to what you need, you can speak with the developer to include extra features you would like but at extra cost on your part.
On the hosting side, most host companies will cap your CPU usage to maybe 30% max, if your website utilization is going above 30% CPU usage? your website will be taken offline, and you may be asked to check which components or modules on your website consuming CPU resource - in this case, you may need to get a developer or programmer to figure out if your site was hacked or which components, modules or plugins are consuming CPU resources.
Even if you are on dedicated hosting plan which in most cases will cost over ₦90000 per month, you will still be required to keep to Disk and CPU usage limit
Since I mentioned the cost of Dedicated Hosting Plan, the cost of Shared hosting is cheap in most cases depending on your disk usage cap and CPU resource limit -- the cost of shared hosting plan could be between ₦2000 to ₦15000 a month - anything below ₦2000 monthly hosting plan is often suitable for static website where the content of your website doesn't change.
Now if you are Tech savvy and you are able to design and host your own website - One thing you will find out is that hardware, software, electricity, broadband package to deliver the expected speed to your customers are not cheap.
Let me give you an example: In Nigeria, if you want to host your website with 98% up-time, you need uninterrupted power supply and uninterrupted broadband service -- this two things alone are rare in Nigeria.
In order for your website to be online and accessible by your customer, you would need minimum of 5Mbps download and minimum of 2mpbs upload and this also depends on the file size of each page of your website and how many people will be accessing your website within a minute.
Now lets look at hardware - How much disk space would your business need?
You would need to consider hard disk cost - for write and read speed, you would need SSD
For storage redundancy - you will need to determine what type of RAID system you want to deploy - you can read more about RAID from one of our articles on martfame.com. If you want to use RAID 1, you need 2 harddisks. When 1 disk goes down, you have data on the other disk and you just replace one
If you want RAID 10 - you need minimum of 4 disks with 2 harddisks tolerance and et cetera.
1 SSD of 500MB depending on brand and quality could cost you between ₦60000 to ₦200000
You would also need minimum of 8GB RAM
You would also need a Webhost management System and many more
But remember you can cut through all these requirements and just focus on Sales and Deliveries.
No need to design website or host one,
